Marek “Ashok” Šmerda, born July 22, 1975, in Brno, Czech Republic, is a veteran guitarist best known as a core member of the iconic extreme metal band Cradle of Filth. Since officially joining the band in 2014, Ashok has brought precision, creativity, and melodic firepower to their gothic and theatrical sound.
Before his international breakout, Ashok had already established a strong reputation in the Czech metal scene. He played in notable acts such as Root, Inner Fear, Equirhodont, and Titanic—projects that shaped his diverse and expressive style. His playing weaves seamlessly between aggressive riffs and soaring leads, adding both clarity and emotional depth to complex arrangements.
Ashok debuted with Cradle of Filth on Hammer of the Witches (2015), followed by Cryptoriana – The Seductiveness of Decay (2017) and Existence Is Futile (2021). His presence has helped rejuvenate the band’s sound, earning praise for injecting both technical skill and renewed energy into their albums and live performances.
Outside of Cradle, Ashok has made guest appearances with other bands, most notably delivering a blistering solo on Craving’s 2023 track “Gods Don’t Negotiate.” His versatility and precision continue to attract collaborations across the metal spectrum.
